How to Audit and Cut Subscriptions You Forgot You Had
Subscriptions are designed to be easy to start and easy to forget. A few dollars here and there feels harmless, but stacked together they can quietly become one of your largest monthly expenses. The fix is a simple audit you can finish in an afternoon.
Find Every Charge
Pull up your last two or three months of bank and credit card statements and read every line. Look for anything that repeats, including annual charges that only show up once a year. Do not forget subscriptions billed through your phone's app store, which are easy to overlook.
Sort Them Into Three Piles
- Keep: things you use regularly and genuinely value
- Cut: things you forgot about or have not used in months
- Maybe: things you use occasionally but could live without
Be honest with the maybe pile. A useful test is to imagine the subscription is already canceled and ask whether you would sign up again today at full price. If the answer is no, it belongs in the cut pile.
Cancel and Save the Difference
Cancel the ones you do not need right away, before you talk yourself out of it. For services you use only part of the year, consider subscribing seasonally instead of year round, then canceling until you want them again. Some companies will offer a discount if you try to cancel, which can be worth taking if you truly use the service.
The final step is the one people skip. Take the money you freed up and send it somewhere useful, like a savings account or a debt payment, so it does not simply get absorbed into everyday spending. Setting a calendar reminder to repeat this audit every few months keeps new forgotten charges from creeping back in.
